Lab-grown vs natural diamonds: what is the difference?

Lab-grown and natural diamonds can look almost identical in a finished piece of jewellery, but they come from fundamentally different origins. Understanding that difference makes it much easier to decide which one is right for you.

The short version

Both are diamonds. Both are made of crystallised carbon and can display the hardness, brilliance and optical behaviour associated with diamond. The central distinction is how and where the crystal formed.

  • Natural diamonds formed through geological processes deep within the Earth and were later brought closer to the surface.
  • Lab-grown diamonds are produced in controlled environments using technologies such as HPHT or CVD.

Appearance

To an unaided observer, a well-cut lab-grown diamond and a well-cut natural diamond can be extremely difficult to distinguish. Both can be colourless, both can contain clarity characteristics, and both can be cut into the familiar shapes used in engagement rings and fine jewellery.

Reliable origin identification is a laboratory task. Gemological institutions use specialised instruments and testing procedures to determine whether a diamond is natural, laboratory-grown or a simulant.

Rarity and origin

This is where the emotional difference is often strongest. Natural diamonds are finite geological materials. Their appeal may be connected with rarity, age and the idea of a crystal created by natural processes over an immense period of time.

Lab-grown diamonds are manufactured. Production can be repeated and scaled, so their rarity is not equivalent to that of natural diamonds. For customers who care less about geological rarity and more about appearance, size or budget, this can be a practical advantage rather than a disadvantage.

Price

Laboratory-grown diamonds generally cost less than natural diamonds with comparable visible characteristics. The difference can be significant, particularly as carat weight increases.

However, price should never be the only comparison. A 1.00 ct diamond is not automatically “better” than a 0.70 ct diamond. Cut quality, measurements, colour, clarity and the overall balance of the stone all affect how it looks.

Quality

Neither origin guarantees quality. Natural diamonds vary widely in colour, clarity and cut, and so do laboratory-grown diamonds. A laboratory-grown stone can contain inclusions and growth features, while a natural diamond can range from heavily included to exceptionally clean.

This is why independent assessment matters. A grading or quality report gives you objective information that is much more useful than a marketing description alone.

Certification and reporting

Independent gemological laboratories can identify origin and document quality characteristics. IGI currently issues laboratory-grown diamond reports that document the 4Cs and identify the stone as laboratory-grown.

GIA changed its approach to colourless-to-near-colourless laboratory-grown diamonds on 1 October 2025. Instead of using the same colour and clarity nomenclature used for natural diamonds, GIA now provides an overall laboratory-grown quality assessment using the categories Premium and Standard when the stone meets the relevant criteria. GIA also laser-inscribes assessed stones with “Laboratory-Grown” and the assessment number.

Value over time

Jewellery should generally be purchased first for personal use and enjoyment, not because a future resale value is guaranteed. Natural and laboratory-grown diamonds operate in different markets, and prices can change over time.

Environmental and ethical considerations

Laboratory-grown diamonds avoid the mining stage, but that does not automatically make every lab-grown diamond “zero impact”. Growing diamonds requires energy, and environmental performance depends on the energy mix, production technology and manufacturing practices.

Likewise, natural-diamond supply chains vary. If responsible sourcing matters to you, ask for specific information rather than relying on broad category-level claims.

A simple decision framework

Choose a lab-grown diamond if your priorities are maximum visual impact, flexibility in carat weight and specifications, and a lower price for a diamond of comparable appearance.

Choose a natural diamond if geological origin, rarity and the story of a naturally formed stone are central to what the jewellery means to you.

Neither choice is universally more romantic or more correct. The best choice is the one you understand and feel confident wearing.
